A Los Angeles police officer shot one of two stray pit bull terriers that threatened to attack him and another officer early Monday in San Pedro, police said. The wounded dog was captured and put to death.
Police said the Harbor Division officers, Ed Diot and Mike O’Brien, were called to the 400 block of West 2nd Street about 1 a.m., after a resident reported that her Labrador retriever had been mauled by the pit bulls.
When the officers arrived in the neighborhood, the dogs ran past their patrol car and returned to attack the officers, police said. At that point, Diot shot one of the pit bulls and both dogs ran from the scene.
The wounded dog was captured by a city animal-regulation officer and given a lethal injection by a veterinarian. The other dog has not been found.
