A 76-year-old man was critically injured late Thursday night when he accidentally ignited a magazine with a cigarette lighter and caught his bed on fire, authorities said.

Lyle John Arnold was flown to the UCSD Medical Center burn unit with severe burns to his face. He was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The damage to Arnold’s Edina Way home was minor, fire investigators said.
