PREP ROUNDUP : El Toro Closes Out Baseball Tournament on a High Note

Sophomore right-hander John Van Houten pitched a three-hitter to lead El Toro to a 5-1 victory over Los Angeles Crenshaw on Saturday, the final day of the Chaparral tournament in Las Vegas.

El Toro (8-5) finished 2-2 in the three-day, round-robin tournament, which featured teams from the western United States. Jason Santoro had two hits and two RBIs for El Toro.

The game was called after six innings because of a time limit.

In the St. Paul tournament:

Mater Dei 9, Alemany 2--Dave Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the first inning, Cale Carter hit a three-run home run in the second for Mater Dei (6-4).

In nonleague baseball:

Troy 4-2, Valencia 3-0--Despite having the flu, Guy Pinelli (4-0) pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking three in the first game for Troy. Brandon Avey (1-0) pitched a two-hitter, struck out eight and walked one and Steve Friedrich had a two-run home run in the third inning of the second game for Troy (7-2).

Magnolia 1-3, Katella 0-2--Magnolia’s Donnie Darby tripled home Art Romero in the fourth inning of the first game.

Liberty Christian 4-14, Perris Temple Christian 0-5--John Bucher (3-0) pitched five innings, walked two, struck out nine and allowed two hits for Liberty Christian in the first game.

In the Sundevil Invitational track meet at San Diego Mount Carmel High School:

Taylor, Parlin win--Shelly Taylor of Edison won the girls’ 800 meters in 2 minutes 17.78 seconds and the 1,600 meters (5:06.37). Mark Parlin of Esperanza won the boys’ shotput with a distance of 61 feet 4 inches.

In the Woodbridge softball tournament:

Trabuco Hills 1, Huntington Beach 0 (10 innings)--Trabuco Hills (7-7) won under the international tiebreaker rule to ruin Huntington Beach pitcher Stephanie Noffsinger’s 10-inning no-hitter. Noffsinger (1-5) walked none and struck out 14. Trabuco Hills started the 10th with Elizabeth Jones on second base. Jones then went to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter hit a one-hopper back to Noffsinger, who threw home. Jones was ruled safe in a call disputed by Huntington Beach (4-7).

El Toro 3, Artesia 0--Misty Lauby (6-4) pitched a three-hitter and Tricia Bulkeley had three hits and one RBI for El Toro.

Trabuco Hills 5, El Toro 2--Christy Lunceford had three hits, stole two bases, scored and had three RBIs for Trabuco Hills. Tricia Bulkeley hit a two-run home run for El Toro (6-8).

Kennedy 6, Westminster 0--Cheryl Longeway pitched a one-hitter and had 16 strikeouts and Danielle McLeod had two hits, two stolen bases and one RBI for Kennedy (9-1).
