COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS : Golf Tournament Rescheduled

Recent rains have twice caused the cancellation of College of the Canyons Foundation’s first Cougar Scholarship Golf Classic.

The tournament, originally scheduled for March 18, was rescheduled for March 25, only to be postponed again because of inclement weather. The date has now been set for April 22 at Valencia Country Club.

“As much as we need the rain, it was disappointing to have to postpone the tournament twice after so much preparation and anticipation,” said foundation Director Kathleen Maloney. “But the response has been so positive that we anticipate this extra month will give us time to accept additional golfers, and hopefully, by then, it will warm up a bit.”

The foundation, which is the fund-raising arm of the college, hopes to raise about $10,000 from the event.

Participating golfers pay $150, which includes entrance fee, a cart, range balls, tee prizes, a golf shirt, refreshments and dinner at an awards ceremony after the tournament. Maloney estimated that 90 golfers had already entered the tournament and 30 more spaces were available.

After the regular tournament, the winning foursome and four other foursomes will compete for additional prizes in a “Shoot Out Round.”

Prizes include a golf weekend for two at either Rancho Bernardo or Marriott Palm Springs, a day for a foursome at Valencia Country Club, a hotel getaway at the Hampton Inn, a Sony “Watch Man” micro-television, a custom-framed print from Fast Frame, a videotaped golf lesson and a $100 golf shop gift certificate.

The idea to stage the tournament came last year after several homeowners appeared before the district Board of Trustees to voice their opposition to an on-campus swap meet to raise funds for the college.

Fifteen corporate sponsors have given their support to the tournament so far.

“We are very fortunate to have so much community support at a time when state funding is at a critical low,” Maloney said.

Campus officials hope the tournament will be an annual event.
