The Cal State Long Beach golf program, recently threatened by financial cutbacks, will get a helping hand from the Toshiba Beach Charities Golf Tournament to be held at Recreation Park on Tuesday. A portion of the funds raised will be set aside to benefit the campaign of the newly formed University Golf Fund-Raising Committee.

Celebrity participants will include former California Angel Bobby Grich, Tom Poston of TV’s “Newhart,” 1984 Olympic gold medal swimmer Steve Lundquist, former Los Angeles Rams Ivory Sully and Mike Lansford and Cal State Long Beach coaches Seth Greenberg and Joan Bonvicini.

Four amateur golfers will be paired with a celebrity. There will be a putting contest at 9 a.m. and the tournament will tee off at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

University golfers will be on hand to assist in the tournament and to hit a substitute shot for interested amateur and celebrity participants on a predesignated hole.

There will be a short auction of a few sports and golf-related items during the awards banquet to benefit the Fund-Raising Committee.

Entry fee for amateur golfers is $300. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Recreation Park, 5000 E. Anaheim St. The entrance is at Federation Drive and 10th Street in Long Beach.
