From Staff and Wire Reports

Former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes got into a wild fist fight with former opponent Trevor Berbick after Holmes’ comeback victory Sunday night over Tim (Doc) Anderson in Hollywood, Fla.

Holmes, weighing 236 pounds in his first fight in 3 1/2 years, had stopped Anderson at 2:03 of the first round.

At the postfight news conference, which Berbick attended, Holmes, 41, said he would never fight Berbick again. Holmes had outpointed Berbick over 15 rounds in defense of the World Boxing Council heavyweight crown on April 11, 1981.

After Holmes left the news conference, Berbick said in a TV interview that a woman friend of the former champion had broken up Berbick’s marriage.

Holmes heard about the comments, found Berbick in front of his hotel and chased him down a driveway, where punches were exchanged.

The fight spilled onto the street in front of the hotel before it was stopped by police.

Holmes outweighed Anderson by 33 3/4 pounds. Anderson had weighed 210 in 1987 when he lasted into the fourth round against George Foreman, who weighed 245 1/2.

Holmes, who got $150,000 for his second fight in almost five years, won for the 49th time, the 35th by knockout, against three losses, all in a row.

Anderson, of Daytona Beach, is 25-14 with 13 knockouts. He has been knocked out 10 times.
