VENTURA : Council to Discuss New Pool Complex

The Ventura City Council agreed Monday to meet with Ventura Community College officials to discuss building a pool complex on the Telegraph Road college campus.

The complex, which will be open to city residents and college students, will include at least two swimming pools.

Barbara Harison, Ventura’s director of parks and recreation, said the city has merely agreed to discuss the project.

“After tonight, we’ll meet with the college staff to hammer out details on design, construction, management and maintenance,” she said.

Under the agreement, which the council approved by a 6-1 vote, the college would build the complex on the campus and the city would pay for up to $5.6 million of it, officials have said.

The complex would not open until 1993, according to a report that Harison submitted to the council.

The city’s last municipal pool was demolished in 1958.

Since then, the only public pools have been at the college and Buena and Ventura high schools. But the pool at Ventura High School was closed last year because of water loss through leaks.
