COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Brown Pitches Pierce to Win Over Valley

Chris Brown held Valley College to three hits Tuesday to lead Pierce to an 8-1 victory in a Western State Conference baseball game at Pierce.

Brown (1-1), a freshman from Taft High, struck out three and walked eight, but he was backed by four double plays.

Pierce catcher Jim Wolf’s base-clearing double in the fifth drove in three runs to give the Brahmas a 7-1 lead. Ricky Banuelos and Carl McFadden each had two hits and two runs batted in for Pierce (15-11, 8-5 in conference play), which won its fourth consecutive conference game.

Steve Trainor took the loss for Valley (7-19-1, 4-9).

In other baseball games:

Cal Lutheran 14, Whittier 8--Jay Lucas, Bob Farber, Pete Washington and Jason Wilcox each had two hits to lead Cal Lutheran to a nonconference win at home.

Cal Lutheran (18-6) led, 14-2, before surrendering eight runs in the ninth.

Mike Rooney (5-3) was the winning pitcher for Cal Lutheran, allowing one run on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.

The win was the sixth in a row for CLU.

Moorpark 16, Santa Barbara 6--Jeff Sommer was four for six with a home run and five RBIs to lead a 22-hit Moorpark assault in a WSC game at Santa Barbara.

Chris Intelkofer and Chris Chandler each had four hits for Moorpark (11-19, 3-9). Brandon Banaga also homered for Moorpark and Billy Hall had three hits.

Harbor 8, Mission 7--Harbor (21-6, 8-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth when a two-out ground ball to Mission second baseman Roy Lozano was thrown away for an error in a Southern California Athletic Conference game.

Mission (15-16, 4-8) had rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. The rally was helped along by RBI singles from Lazaro Campos and pinch-hitter Brandon Hedding, and a two-run error.

The Master’s 11, Cal Baptist 9--Russ Henzie’s grand slam ignited a five-run second inning to fuel the Mustangs’ NAIA District III victory over Cal Baptist at The Master’s.

Chad Hankinson went three for three with two doubles, and teammates Steve Smith and Sheldon Sparks each had three hits for The Master’s (16-12, 9-5).

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 9, Rancho Santiago 1--Tami Harp’s two home runs broke a school record and helped the Raiders beat Rancho Santiago in a nonconference game at Moorpark.

Harp has hit seven home runs this season, breaking Laura Detweiler’s record of six set in 1988.

Stevie Campbell and Annette Bell each went three for four to lead Moorpark’s 16-hit attack.
