Anaheim’s Treatment of Deaf Pageant Contestant

Unfortunately, the Miss Anaheim Scholarship Pageant is still operating in the Dark Ages. It is my understanding that we as a society no longer legally, morally, or ethically discriminate against the handicapped.

Our public schools are equipped to meet the needs of handicapped students, and they freely enter into all activities on our junior and senior high campuses. Special consideration and accommodations are provided to assist them whenever possible--and providing interpreters for the deaf to attend regular classes and participate in after-school activities is a reality.

The city of Anaheim has gone to considerable expense in the past 20 years to provide wheelchair access on our street corners and in restrooms in public buildings. Perhaps it is now time to bring your pageant into the ‘90s on behalf of Lynn Lochrie and all its citizens!
