COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Canyons Posts 12-Run Inning in 26-8 Rout

College of the Canyons banged out 21 hits en route to a 26-8 Western State Conference baseball win over Santa Monica on Thursday at Canyons.

Canyons did much of its damage in the fifth inning, scoring 12 times. The Cougars (15-14-1, 10-4 in WSC play) had seven hits, received six walks and had two hit batsmen as the first 13 batters in the inning reached base. Cougars with three-hit days included Ty Powell (four runs, two runs batted in), Bobby Corrales (two RBIs) and Robert Barrena (three-run home run, four RBIs).

The scoring outburst made a winner of starter Mitch Bowen (2-3). The game lasted 4 hours 15 minutes.

In other baseball games:

Bakersfield 5, Valley 4--Sean Lewis went two for five with an RBI and Chad Ratliff stole three bases for Valley in a WSC game at home.

Trailing, 4-3, in the sixth inning, Bakersfield (5-9 in conference play) touched Valley starter Rob Kostenbader for the tying and winning runs.

Valley is 7-20-1, 4-10.

Pierce 8, Moorpark 7--Joe Cascione smacked a grand slam in the first inning, then drove in the winning run in the seventh in a WSC game at Moorpark.

Moorpark overcame a 7-4 Pierce lead to tie the score, 7-7, in the fifth inning before Cascione singled in Pat Huston, who had doubled with one out. The hit made a winner of Denny Sharp (2-2), who pitched just one-third of an inning.

Pierce is 16-11, 9-5.

TRACK & FIELD

Moorpark 93, Santa Barbara 49, Ventura 42, Oxnard 0--Phil Antonie recorded personal bests to win the 100 (10.7 seconds) and 200 (21.9) meters, and ran the second leg on the victorious 400 relay team (43.0) for Moorpark in the Western State Conference meet at Ventura.
