ELECTIONS : Runoffs Tuesday in Pomona, Pasadena

Voters will choose a mayor and two council members in Pomona and a director and school board member in Pasadena in runoff elections Tuesday.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in both cities.

Pomona Mayor Donna Smith is seeking her third two-year term against Councilman Tomas Ursua. Smith and her husband own an auto generator and alternator business. Ursua is a residential builder.

Councilwoman Nell Soto, who is a local government and community affairs representative for Southern California Rapid Transit District, is seeking reelection in Pomona Council District 1 against Bob Jackson, a junior high school teacher. The district takes in the central part of the city west of Garey Avenue and south of the San Bernardino Freeway.

In Pomona Council District 4, which covers the central part of the city east of Garey Avenue and south of the San Bernardino Freeway, Bill Shelton, who owns a pool service, is running against Paula H. Lantz, who teaches developmentally delayed infants. The winner will succeed Councilman Mark A. T. Nymeyer, who did not seek reelection.

In Pasadena, the runoff for the District 1 Board of Directors seat will determine the successor to 12-year incumbent John Crowley. The candidates are Isaac Richard, an affordable-housing consultant, and Nicholas T. Conway, a municipal auditor. The district takes in the affluent Linda Vista Annandale neighborhood and heavily minority Northwest Pasadena.

Elbie Hickambottom, who has been on the Pasadena Unified School District board for 12 years, is seeking a fourth term in an at-large election against E. Clark Coberly. Hickambottom is a retired U.S. Army major. Coberly is a lawyer and chief financial officer for two area corporations.
