COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Garman Gets 600th Victory; Titans Split With Las Vegas

Judi Garman won her 600th game as the Cal State Fullerton softball coach when the Titans won the second game of a Big West Conference doubleheader with Nevada Las Vegas, 3-0, Friday at Las Vegas.

Garman has 600 victories, 171 losses and four ties in 12 seasons as the head coach at Fullerton (40-12-1, 16-7-1 in conference).

Ann Van Dortrecht pitched a three-hitter, striking out 11 and walking four to improve to 13-3 for Fullerton. Mich DeBree had two hits and scored twice and Joy Tiner had a hit and one run batted in for Fullerton in the second game.

In the first game, Las Vegas’ Lori Horrigen outpitched Fullerton’s Tiffany Boyd as Las Vegas won, 1-0. Horrigen pitched a three-hitter, striking out three and walking one to improve to 18-7. Tricia Reimche had three hits and Tricia Spencer singled and scored for fourth-ranked Las Vegas (37-11-1, 16-4-1).

Boyd (24-4) pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine for fifth-ranked Fullerton.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Bakersfield 3-1, Chapman 0-3--Chapman, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II, gained a split with No. 15 Bakersfield on RBI singles by Michelle Hempel, Kristina Webb and Rose Conner. Jacki Blake (18-3) pitched both games for the Panthers (33-7, 6-2). Second-place Bakersfield is 21-14, 5-5.

In Big West Conference baseball

Cal State Long Beach 6, UC Irvine 5--Fourth-ranked Cal State Long Beach scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, breaking a 5-5 tie. Cobi Crable doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, went to third on a sacrifice and scored when Scott Palanoa hit into a fielder’s choice. UC Irvine (19-25, 1-9) stranded 13 runners.

Irvine’s Mike Goodcase had three hits and three RBIs and Matt Filson, who transferred from Long Beach, scored two runs and had three hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Palanoa hit his eighth home run in the second inning and Willy Speakman had three hits and had one RBI for Long Beach (32-13, 8-2).

Nevada Las Vegas 10, Cal State Fullerton 5--Mick Kuster hit two home runs, a two-run homer in the first and a three-run home run in the seventh, for host Las Vegas (23-15, 7-3). Trevor Rush and Chris Powell each had two hits and scored for Fullerton (23-18, 6-4).

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:

Chapman 4, UC Riverside 0--Colin Klein pitched a four-hit shutout for visiting Chapman (6-14, 10-28).
