An off-duty San Diego police officer--fearing an attack--on Sunday shot and apparently wounded a man riding in a car that had pulled up alongside a car carrying two officers, police said.

The officer, who had just finished a work shift minutes before, was being driven by another off-duty officer west on Skyline Drive in Southeast San Diego about 2:05 a.m. when the car pulled up on the passenger side, police said.

At the intersection with Woodman Street, the driver of the second car appeared to be agitated and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them, the officers said. The officer in the passenger’s seat fired one shot at the driver of the other car, police said.

The other car roared away with the officers close behind. The officers lost the other car somewhere near Alderly and Kirtright streets, police said.

A short time later, Dave Henry Maxey, 22, went to Paradise Valley Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the hand, officers said.

The names of the two officers were not released by the department.
