Colleen Matsuhara, an assistant coach at Cal State Long Beach, was interviewed for the UC Irvine women’s basketball coaching job Tuesday, a source said.

Matsuhara also has been an assistant at Notre Dame, Texas and UCLA and was head coach at Nebraska from 1980-83. She also has been interviewed for the Long Beach job, which came open when Joan Bonvicini was named coach at Arizona after the season.

Glenn McDonald, another Long Beach assistant, is also among the candidates seeking to replace Bonvicini.

Irvine received approximately 215 applications for its coaching job, said Barbara Camp, an assistant athletic director who is heading the search committee.

“We’ve had some good people interested in our position,” Camp said. “There are head coaches of Division I programs as well as top assistants, all the way to good local high school coaches and junior college coaches.”

At least two more candidates will be interviewed by the end of the week, and Camp said the school hopes to name a coach in the next two weeks.
