MacLeod to Resign From Knicks, Pursue Job With Irish
John MacLeod will resign as coach of the New York Knicks today, and several sources said he will be the next basketball coach at Notre Dame.
A source close to the NBA team told the Associated Press Wednesday night that MacLeod “is leaving on his own” and is not being fired.
WISH-TV in Indianapolis reported Wednesday night that MacLeod would resign from the Knicks today and accept the Notre Dame job later this week. The station attributed the report to MacLeod’s attorney in Phoenix. Later, the New York Times quoted Patrick McGroder, MacLeod’s attorney, as saying, “John is the first person that Notre Dame actually offered the job to. . . . It’s a reasonable certainty that John will be Notre Dame’s coach by the end of the week.”
A Knick spokesman said the team would have an announcement regarding MacLeod either today or Friday, and a Notre Dame spokesman did not return a call.
Nebraska Coach Danny Nee, a former Notre Dame assistant, who earlier took himself out of the running for the job, said Tuesday he thought MacLeod would get the position.
