COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Beat Santa Barbara in 13 Innings

Dan Naulty pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his second victory in three days as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Santa Barbara, 14-6, in 13 innings Sunday in a Big West Conference game at Santa Barbara.

Fullerton led, 6-3, in the ninth but reliever Chris Robinson allowed three runs and was replaced by Naulty, who got the final out of the inning. Naulty (7-3) allowed a hit and had six strikeouts in relief.

Craig Fairbrother hit a home run to open the 13th for Fullerton, and the Titans went on to score seven more runs in the inning. Fairbrother, Frank Herman, Trevor Rush and Steve Sisco had RBI singles and Matt Hattabaugh and Chris Powell had RBI ground balls in the inning for Fullerton (31-21, 13-5 in conference).

Bill Fitzgerald pitched the 13th for Fullerton, but Naulty stayed in the game in left field in case he was needed on the mound again.

Fullerton is a game behind first-place Fresno State and a game ahead of third-place Long Beach. The Titans have three conference games remaining against San Jose State starting Friday in Fullerton.

In another Big West Conference game:

San Jose State 5, UC Irvine 1--Mike Kostainsek had a two-run double in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie for host San Jose State (22-27, 6-12).

San Jose’s Paul Anderson (1-2) pitched a four-hitter and the run he allowed was unearned. Steve Ott singled and scored for Irvine (23-30, 5-13).

In the Sonoma softball tournament:

Chapman 3, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 2 (9 innings)--Denise Popoff walked on four consecutive pitches with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to force home the winning run in the championship game for Chapman (46-11).

Chapman defeated San Francisco State, 4-0, in the quarterfinals and Portland, 1-0, in the semifinals also Sunday.
