COUNTYWIDE : Amnesty Offered for Overdue Citations

Share

The Ventura County district attorney’s office is encouraging people with overdue traffic tickets and other types of citations to pay the fines on them this month to avoid arrest and stiff penalties in the future.

The amnesty program, which voids late charges for offenses ranging from speeding to jaywalking, seems to be catching on slowly, said Florence Prushan, assistant executive officer of the Ventura County courts.

About 500 offenders of 77,000 have paid off their tickets so far, she said.

Prushan emphasized that the program is not a law-enforcement sting.

Some offenders have called to ask whether they will be arrested when they show up to pay their tickets, she said.

She added, however, that once the program ends on May 31, it will be followed by a multi-agency law enforcement sweep to locate and arrest people with outstanding warrants.

Questions should be directed to the court administrator’s office at 654-2965.
