Six people were thrown into the swift, icy Merced River when three rubber rafts capsized. One drowned, and two others suffered hypothermia.

Yosemite National Park rangers used ropes to pull the people to shore after the accident Monday afternoon near Bridalveil Falls, a popular tourist spot. Salvador V. Ruiz, 18, of Los Angeles was found 100 yards downstream from the accident. He was pronounced dead at the park’s medical clinic, according to Kris Fister, a public information officer.

Two other rafters, ages 19 and 30, were treated for hypothermia, Fister said.
