POP ALBUM CHART : Everybody Wants to Get Into the Act

Share

Big shake-up this week at the top of Billboard magazine’s pop album chart: In just its third week, Michael Bolton’s latest ends R.E.M.’s one-week reign at No. 1, with the “New Jack City” soundtrack as the new No. 2. Meanwhile, the Garth Brooks phenomenon continues, fueled perhaps by the controversy over his “The Thunder Rolls” video. Not only does Brook’s “No Fences”--having already sold more than 3 million in the United States--make a rare country appearance in the pop Top 5 this week, but his million-selling 1990 debut “Garth Brooks” is knocking on the Top 20’s door, moving up to No. 22 from last week’s No. 40 showing.

* Huey Lewis, whose first big score came in 1982 with the song “Working For a Living,” is back on the blue-collar rock track. His “Hard at Play” album makes a strong debut at No. 27.
