Aztecs Pound Wyoming, Stay Alive in Tournament

San Diego State stayed alive in the losers’ bracket of the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament with a 12-1 victory over Wyoming at Hawaii’s Rainbow Stadium. The Aztecs, who lost to Brigham Young in Thursday’s opener, 19-1, eliminated the Cowboys (31-22) with 18 hits and a complete game by Brian Holliday.

Holliday (6-3) struck out nine. SDSU (40-19) had three players with three hits or more. Outfielder Brent Ferguson was five for five with a triple and two RBIs. Scott Dennison was three for five, tripled twice and drove in three runs.

MEN’S GOLF

San Diego State is in fifth place after the first round of the WAC Championships at Colorado State. BYU is in first with 279, followed by Hawaii (283), New Mexico (288) and UTEP (290).

Dean Wilson and Jeff Kraemer, both of BYU and Utah’s Damien Jamila lead the field with 68.

Aztec Dave Schnider is in fifth place with a 70. Teammate Tim Todd shot a 73 and Tim Hart shot 74.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC San Diego’s Chad Morse was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III championships at The Claremont Colleges. Morse lost to Lance Au of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-1, 6-2. Morse, the only UCSD player to advance to the third round, defeated Dave Muldawer of UC Santa Cruz, 6-1, 6-2.

WATER SKIING

Defending overall champion, Mike Kjellander of Fruitland Park, Fla., was one of eight to qualify for the men’s slalom finals Sunday in the Michelob Dry Water Ski Tour at Mission Bay’s Fiesta Island.

Defending slalom champion Bob LaPoint of Lake Tahoe and Andy Mapple of Orlando, Fla., who has the world record for men’s slalom, also qualified.

Qualifying rounds of the women’s and men’s jump and freestyle jump are today with all finals Sunday.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Jamie Dalley led UCSD to two victories in the USA Women’s Water Polo Nationals at UCSD’s Canyonview Pool. Dalley and Kristen Larson each had three goals to lead the Tritons to an 11-3 victory over California. Dalley led six scorers with five goals and UCSD out-scored Bucknell, 7-1, in the first quarter of a 14-5 victory.
