Cal Lutheran Player Survives 2 Rounds in NAIA Singles Play

Tomislav Zelenovic of Cal Lutheran was the only Kingsman player to survive the first two rounds of singles play in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics tennis championships at Rock Hill Tennis Club in Kansas City, Mo., on Monday.

Zelenovic defeated Mike Cihlar of Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and Matt Stanley of Northwood, Mich., 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), in the second round to advance to today’s third-round match against Sebastian Loketek of Auburn-Montgomery, Ala.

Cal Lutheran’s Tapio Rantanen won his first-round match, but lost to Ken Smith of Oklahoma City, the 15th-seeded player, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.

Mike Gennette of Cal Lutheran, the 20th-seeded player, was upset by Mark Hagen of North Florida, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), in a first-round match.
