Deputies Discover Body After Breaking Up Fight
Two sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the unincorporated Athens area discovered the body of a gunshot victim Wednesday after confronting two men struggling for a handgun outside a house in the 10900 block of Vermont Avenue.
Deputy Rich Erickson of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said one of the deputies fired a single round that missed when one of the men gained control of the gun and pointed it at the deputies.
The pair then surrendered, Erickson said, and the deputies entered the house and found a man’s body. He had been shot in the chest, and investigators determined that the errant shot had not hit the victim. Erickson said the men who had been fighting face questioning.
