NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Padres Outlast Braves in 12th, 11-10

Darrin Jackson homered on the first pitch of the 12th inning and the San Diego Padres, taking advantage of five Atlanta errors to score six unearned runs, beat the Braves, 11-10, in a 4-hour 44-minute marathon Thursday night at Atlanta.

Jackson connected off Jeff Parrett (0-1), spoiling an Atlanta comeback spiced by a three-run homer by David Justice.

Both teams scored four times in the 10th, all the San Diego runs unearned after two Atlanta errors.

Steve Rosenberg (1-1) got Francisco Cabrera to hit into a game-ending double play after Justice singled for his fourth hit.

Justice went four for seven with four runs batted in. San Diego’s Tony Gwynn had three hits and three RBIs.

The Braves trailed, 10-6, going to the bottom of the 10th, but Jeff Treadway hit a sacrifice fly and Justice homered to tie the score.

San Diego’s Tom Lampkin broke a 6-6 tie with a run-scoring single with two out in the top of the 10th. Bip Roberts tripled home Lampkin and scored on an error by Atlanta first baseman Sid Bream. Gwynn doubled home the fourth run.

The Braves tied it, 6-6, when Justice doubled, took third on a sacrifice by Bream and scored on Greg Olson’s sacrifice fly.

Chicago 4, New York 3--Doug Dascenzo’s two-strike squeeze scored Shawon Dunston in the ninth, lifting the Cubs to a victory over the Mets at New York.

The Cubs have won their first two games under Manager Jim Essian, who replaced Don Zimmer Wednesday.

Les Lancaster (1-1) pitched two innings for the victory and Paul Assenmacher got his fourth save.

The Mets took a 3-2 lead on Hubie Brooks’ run-scoring double in the sixth, but Ron Darling walked Luis Salazar with two out in the seventh and Dunston tripled to tie the score.

St. Louis 8, Pittsburgh 2--Jose DeLeon won for only the third time in 27 starts as Felix Jose and Todd Zeile each had three hits for the Cardinals in a victory over the Pirates at Pittsburgh.

The victory was the first for DeLeon (2-3) since April 20.

DeLeon was 7-19 last year, the second 19-loss season of his career. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits--including Jay Bell’s fifth home run to start the sixth--struck out one and walked three. Scott Terry worked the final three innings for his first save.

Cincinnati 6, San Francisco 2--Jack Armstrong pitched a four-hitter and Paul O’Neill hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning as the Reds downed the Giants at Cincinnati.

San Francisco has lost six consecutive games, including three in a row to the Reds. The Giants, who have not led in any game during the streak, had not been swept at Riverfront Stadium since 1985.

Armstrong (4-2) struck out five and walked one in his first complete game since last July 29 at San Francisco, a game he lost, 4-0.
