HIGH SCHOOL TRACK / MASTERS MEET : Carrigan Puts Sprint Streak on Line Tonight

Ricky Carrigan of Compton High School will try to extend his outdoor sprint winning streak tonight in the Masters track and field meet at Cerritos College. Field events begin at 5:30 p.m., running events at 7.

Athletes from all four Southern Section divisions will compete, with the top five finishers in each event qualifying for the State meet next Friday and Saturday.

Carrigan, who has not lost a race this season, won the Southern Section 4-A Division titles in the 100 and 200 meters last week and is the top qualifier in both events with marks of 10.48 seconds and 21.30 seconds. His main rivals are Tim Martin of San Clemente in the 100 and Kevin Trebelhorn of Moorpark and Jack Bellamy of Thousand Oaks in the 200.

Other top boys’ performers include Edward Hervey of Compton and Gerald McCladdie of Compton Centennial in the 200 and 400 meters, Mike Terry of El Modena and Bryan Woodward of Long Beach Poly in the 800 meters, Louie Quintana of Arroyo Grande in the 800 and 1,600 meters, and Mark Parlin of Anaheim Esperanza in the shotput and discus.

Sophomore Marion Jones of Oxnard Rio Mesa, defending State champion in the 100 and 200 meters, and Juliana Yendork of Walnut, two-time defending State champion in the long jump and triple jump, are the leading girls’ competitors.
