HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Qualifiers Bishop’s, Holtville to Meet for Title

Bishop’s and Holtville, two teams that had to win qualifying games to make the 1-A tournament field, will meet for the section championship Tuesday at Grossmont College.

Bishop’s avenged two Coastal League losses to Julian with a 15-6 victory Friday in the 1-A semifinals at Ramona. Bishop’s (10-12), which had to beat Calvin Christian to qualify for the tournament, has won six in a row.

Steve Caltagrione and Dan Robinson led the Knights’ 12-hit attack by each going three for five. Caltagrione scored two runs and drove in five. Three of his RBIs came on a three-run homer in Bishop’s five-run fourth inning. Robinson had three RBIs, all coming with two outs.

Jake Hamer scattered nine hits and survived five Bishop’s errors in picking up his second victory against four losses. Julian finished 14-9.

Alberto Valenzuela pitched three innings of one-run ball to pick up his second consecutive playoff victory as Holtville advanced to the 1-A finals with a 7-5 victory against Borrego Springs at Julian High.

Holtville (14-7) had to beat La Jolla Country Day in a qualifying game.

Oscar Cortes and Gary Vasquez hit solo homers for Borrego Springs (13-10). Vasquez (2-4) started and lost for Borrego Springs.

The 3-A semifinals will be today at Southwestern College. Mira Mesa meets Granite Hills in the first game at 11 a.m. and Castle Park faces Montgomery at 2 p.m. In the 2-A semifinals at Grossmont College, Grossmont meets Madison at 11 a.m. and USDHS plays Mission Bay at 2 p.m. Tickets for each doubleheader are $2 for students and $3 for adults.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Taryn Burgk of section champion Torrey Pines advanced to the third round of the section individual singles tournament at Morley Field with two easy victories. In the doubles tournament, Matt Bonin and Jose Lopez of St. Augustine advanced to the second round with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Jack Chin and Herren Edra of Bonita Vista.

The third round of singles and second round of doubles will be played Tuesday at Morley Field. The seeded players begin play Wednesday.
