BASEBALL REGIONAL NOTEBOOK : Sharts Takes Special Delight in CSUN Victory

Share

In terms of personal revenge, Scott Sharts inflicted little pain Friday on his former teammates from Miami.

Only two Cal State Northridge starters went hitless as the Matadors routed the Hurricanes, 13-6, in the second round of the NCAA West II Regional at Beiden Field. Sharts, who transferred to Northridge last year after a season with Miami, was one of them.

Still, the victory was gratifying. “That was a very pleasing thing for me to be a part of,” Sharts said after walking once in five plate appearances.

Sharts had only 36 at-bats as a Hurricane freshman and batted .222. He said he didn’t expect to unload his frustration from that season all in one game.

“I figured they would know how to pitch to me if anybody would,” Sharts said. “They did a good job, but that’s all right because the other guys picked me up. They just pounded the ball and I feel real good about that.”

Statistically speaking: Northridge’s 17-hit outburst was its highest total in more than a month. The Matadors had a season-high 20 hits in a 10-1 win over U. S. International on April 19. . . .

By scoring three runs against Miami, leadoff hitter Craig Clayton equaled the Northridge career record for runs. He has 175, tying Mike O’Hara who played from 1980-83. . . .

Clayton had his second four-hit game of the season. The other was in March against San Diego. . . .

Scott Richardson also had four hits for Northridge, marking the fourth time this season he has had that many or more. Richardson is batting .332. . . .

Greg Shockey’s four runs batted in against the Hurricanes give him 57 this season. He is second on the team, trailing Sharts by six.

Pain in the back: Fresno State’s Tim Costic, a sophomore from Monroe High batting .252, was released from St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno on Thursday. He was hospitalized for nine days suffering from lower back pain.

Stanford stopper: Scott Weiss, former ace of the Quartz Hill High staff, was the winning pitcher for Stanford in its 12-5 decision over San Diego State on Thursday.

Weiss, a senior right-hander, allowed two hits and a walk without giving up a run in 3 2/3 innings.

Used as a starter and also in relief, Weiss has a record of 8-7 with a Pacific 10 Conference-high seven saves. Weiss, a first-team all-conference selection is the school’s all-time strikeout leader, fanning an average of 9.91 batters per nine innings.

Local flavor: Not counting the locals on the Northridge roster, there are nine players from the Valley region playing in the regional at Fresno.

Stanford has four, including Weiss. The others are Mark Skeels, a catcher from Thousand Oaks High; Jeff Light, an infielder from Montclair Prep; and Andrew Lorraine, a pitcher from Hart High.

Fresno has infielder Eric Greene from Newbury Park High, pitcher Bobby Kazmirski from Agoura High and Costic. Portland has Charles Williams, a pitcher from Glendale High, and San Diego State has catcher Mike Shwartzer, from Reseda High.
