A pregnant Pacoima woman died and two people were hurt when a car careened off a road in the Angeles National Forest near Sunland and tumbled 170 feet down a ravine, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.

Myra Adolfo Lopez, 22, was airlifted by a Fire Department helicopter crew to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where she died, Sgt. Ed Bennett said. The fetus also died in the accident, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said.

The driver, Jose Lopez, 23, and a second passenger, Margarita Arevalo, 21, were taken by ambulance to Olive View Medical Center, said Officer Calvin Aubrey of the California Highway Patrol.

Hospital spokesman Mario Sewell said Lopez was discharged. He declined to discuss Arevalo’s condition. Authorities would not say whether the driver and the pregnant woman were related.

The accident occurred on Big Tujunga Road, 6 miles north of Orovista Avenue about 10 p.m. Friday, Bennett said. Authorities did not know why the car went off the road.

The Montrose Search and Rescue Team was called out. Team members descended on ropes to the three people, Bennett said.
