Chavez to Meet Meeks in Ring Tonight at Irvine
Ernie Chavez will try to bounce back in tonight’s main event of the monthly boxing program at the Irvine Marriott.
Chavez (13-1) of Santa Ana will risk his California welterweight title in a scheduled 12-round bout against Calvin Meeks (13-3) of Los Angeles. Chavez has seven knockouts and Meeks has five.
Chavez last fought Feb. 28 against Alberto Alcarez in a nontitle main event at Irvine. Chavez was hoping to make that his last fight at the Irvine Marriott and move on to bigger arenas, but Alcarez had other ideas.
Alcarez knocked down Chavez 10 seconds into the fight, then knocked him out 14 seconds later.
If Chavez gets past Meeks, he could be in line for a rematch with Alcarez this summer, promoter Don Fraser said.
The first of six scheduled bouts starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $32, $27 and $22, go on sale at 10 a.m. today in the hotel’s ballroom.
