THOUSAND OAKS : City May Lay Off 45 in Budget Crunch

Share

Thousand Oaks has begun targeting workers who could be laid off as part of a series of budget-cutting measures, the city’s personnel director said.

Up to 45 municipal employees could receive layoff notices beginning next week, Human Services Manager Greg Eckman said.

Officials say they need to cut up to 10% of the city’s 450 employees to prevent a deficit at the end of next fiscal year, which is June, 1992.

Eckman said he is evaluating job performance and seniority in deciding who will be laid off. There are at least 10 full-time positions that will remain vacant because of a hiring freeze imposed last month, he said.

Assistant City Manager MaryJane V. Lazz said that because of the layoffs and citywide cost-cutting imposed in March, Thousand Oaks is expected to avoid a deficit in the general fund at the end of June. The city has not yet adopted a budget for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Thousand Oaks may lose up to $3.1 million in county and state funds next year.

The county is also expected to charge Thousand Oaks about $300,000 next year for the cost of booking prisoners.
