A suspect in the shooting of an armored car guard two weeks ago has been captured in Las Vegas and returned to Orange County to face attempted-murder charges, along with two others allegedly involved in the botched holdup, police said Saturday.

Mark Anthony Blount, 25, of Pomona, who taunted Garden Grove police by challenging them to catch him, was arrested near the Las Vegas Strip on Wednesday night and returned to the Orange County Jail on Friday night, Garden Grove Police Sgt. Mike Handfield said.

Handfield said Blount is being held on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery. His bail was set at $250,000.

Blount was the last of the three suspects to be jailed. The three were wanted in a May 16 armored van holdup that ended in the wounding of guard John Statkus, 25, of Fullerton. Statkus was shot in the head, arm and neck and remains in guarded condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

He was servicing a 7-Eleven automated teller machine when he was ambushed.

The two other suspects, both of Ontario, are Gilbert Orlandus Green, 22, and Thomas Anthony Chaney, 28, a former guard with Statkus’ company, Wells Fargo Armored Car Services. They were arrested the day of the robbery and are being held on suspicion of robbery, attempted murder and kidnapping for robbery. A preliminary hearing is scheduled June 12.

Statkus, a former Marine who had worked as a guard for two years, was making his rounds restocking and servicing teller machines when he parked his van in front of a 7-Eleven store at Chapman Avenue and Magnolia Street. After working on the cash machine, Statkus opened the side door of the van, and two men suddenly appeared. One of them shot him several times.

According to Garden Grove Police Lt. John Woods, Blount was described as the gunman by the other two suspects during interviews with detectives.

Las Vegas police received information that Blount was staying at an apartment near the University of Nevada campus in Las Vegas, about 2 miles from the Strip. When Blount left the apartment, officers arrested him. He did not resist.

Handfield said Blount was admitted to Orange County Jail at 10:25 p.m. Friday.

Shortly after the shooting, officers contacted Blount through a phone beeper he wore. When the suspect realized that he was talking to a police officer, he ridiculed him by saying, “Catch me if you can.”

The other two suspects told police that they knew only the first name of Blount, who has twice been convicted on drug charges. Blount was identified from a picture in his Pomona High School yearbook.
