Jun Leads Amateur Tournament

San Diego’s Mike Jun birdied the final two holes to take the lead from Todd Demsey at the 59th San Diego Men’s Amateur Championship Sunday on the North Course at Torrey Pines.

Jun, who graduated from Madison High and completed his sophomore season at San Diego State, shot a 4-under par 68 to give him 36-hole 141. He has a one-stroke lead over Demsey, who completed his redshirt freshman season at Arizona State. Demsey graduated from Torrey Pines High.

The third round is Saturday at Balboa Park and the final round is Sunday at Torrey Pines South.

BASEBALL

Ramona’s Todd Tuggle went one for two with an RBI double and a run-scoring sacrifice fly to lead a group of 2-A high school seniors to a 7-3 victory over a team of 3-A seniors in the Jack Taylor Memorial All-Star Game at SDSU. San Pasqual’s Ben Duncan added two RBIs.

University City pitcher Mike Saipe was the winning pitcher. The loser was Chula Vista’s Cesar Martinez.

TRIATHLON

Greg Welch of Encinitas clocked 1:52:01 and finished third in the men’s pro division at the sixth Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon in Mission Viejo. Defending champion Brad Kearns of Cool, Calif., won in 1:49:39.
