Lack of Parking Blocks Medical Offices

Citing a lack of parking, the Planning Commission this week denied a request to allow medical offices at the Crown Center Office Complex.

“We don’t want to run into the overcrowding problems encountered by other medical centers in town that are in mixed-use business complexes,” Commissioner Sunnie Castner said.

Owned by the Laguna Land & Cattle Co. Inc., the 96,000-square-foot office center at Crown Valley and Marguerite parkways was 61 spaces short of the parking required by city code for medical offices.

The owner of the building had asked the commission for an exemption to the city code, saying medical firms were needed to boost the 38% occupancy of the complex. But the commissioners asked Laguna Land & Cattle to come up with another plan, suggesting that the company could pave over existing landscaping to create the necessary parking spaces.
