Warren Schutte, a sophomore from Nevada Las Vegas, made NCAA history while stopping the historic chances of Phil Mickelson.

Schutte shot a five-under-par 67 Saturday to win the NCAA men’s golf championships, becoming the first foreign-born player to win the title.

Oklahoma State won its seventh team championship and first since 1987.

Mickelson, of Arizona State, failed in his bid to join Ben Crenshaw, formerly of Texas, as the only three-time individual champion. The left-hander, one of only three golfers to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur, shot his worst score of the tournament, a 75, and finished in a five-way tie for fourth at 289.

Schutte, from Durban, South Africa, shot the low round of the tournament and ended at 283, three shots better than David Duval of Georgia Tech on the 6,865-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Schutte had six birdies, an eagle and three bogeys in his 67.

Duval, a senior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., had a 69 and finished at 286.

Franklin Langham of Georgia, who led after the second and third rounds, had a three-over 75 and finished third at 287.

Oklahoma State finished seven shots ahead of North Carolina.
