AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Red Sox Hit Four Home Runs in 6-2 Win

Carlos Quintana hit two two-run home runs and Ellis Burks and Jack Clark hit one each Monday night as the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-2, at Seattle.

It was the first time in his career Quintana has hit two home runs in a game.

Boston’s Mike Gardiner (2-1), pitched 6 2/3 innings for the decision, giving up a run and six hits.

Burks hit the first pitch by Randy Johnson (3-6) eight rows into the left-field stands.

Quintana, who had only four hits in 38 at-bats, hit his first home run off Johnson in the fifth inning more than 400 feet, over the center-field fence. In the seventh, Quintana hit a home run off reliever Pat Rice.

The Mariners got their first run in the seventh on Edgar Martinez’s sacrifice fly. They scored again in the eighth on Henry Cotto’s single.

Chicago 3, Texas 2--At Arlington, Tex., Ruben Sierra’s error with two out in the 13th inning led to two unearned runs as the White Sox won their fifth consecutive game.

The Rangers have lost eight consecutive games and 10 of 11.

With the score tied, 1-1, Chicago’s Lance Johnson led off the 13th inning with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice.

One out later, reliever Gerald Alexander (3-1), the fourth Texas pitcher, intentionally walked Tim Raines. Joey Cora then hit a fly ball to Sierra, who backpedaled to the warning track. But the ball bounced off Sierra’s glove and two runs scored.

Melido Perez (3-4) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the decision. Bobby Thigpen, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Texas’ Brian Downing, pitched the 13th inning to earn his 12th save.

Tim Raines scored for Chicago in the first inning and Texas tied it in the seventh with an unearned run on a throwing error by Scott Fletcher.

Minnesota 8, Cleveland 5--At Minneapolis, Mike Pagliarulo hit a three-run double as the Twins won their ninth consecutive game.

The winning streak is the Twins’ longest since 1985, when they won 10 in a row. Minnesota has won 12 of 13 games and has a 30-16 won-loss record since starting the season 2-9.

Pagliarulo, whose second inning error allowed a run to score as the Indians built a 4-1 lead, lined Eric King’s pitch off the fence in right-center field in the fifth inning to give the the Twins a 6-4 lead.

Twin reliever Paul Abbott (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief of starter Mark Guthrie to earn his first major league victory. Rick Aguilera got the final out for his 16th save.

King (4-5) was shaky from the start and failed to hold a three-run lead. He allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Shane Mack had three of Minnesota’s 14 hits, and Kent Hrbek drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a groundout.

Oakland 12, Detroit 6--Jose Canseco hit a three-run double to break a 6-6 tie in a six-run eighth inning at Oakland.

Mark McGwire drove in five runs with two homers, including a three-run shot to cap the eighth, in which Oakland got seven consecutive hits.

Canseco hit his double into the right-field corner off reliever Mike Henneman (5-2).

Canseco, hitless in four at-bats, sliced an 0-2 pitch off Henneman after singles by Lance Blankenship, Rickey Henderson and Dave Henderson loaded the bases. After Canseco’s double, Jerry Don Gleaton came on and gave up a bunt single to Willie Wilson and a home run to McGwire to put the Athletics ahead, 12-6.

Johnny Guzman, the third of four Oakland pitchers, got his first major league victory by getting the last out of the eighth. Dennis Eckersley pitched the ninth.

Trailing, 6-4, in the seventh, the A’s tied it off reliever Dan Petry on Ernest Riles’ two-out, two-run homer after third baseman Travis Fryman’s fielding error on McGwire’s grounder kept the inning going.

The Tigers trailed, 4-3, in the top of the seventh when A’s starter Dave Stewart walked four batters, the last one being Cecil Fielder with two out, to force in the tying run. Mickey Tettleton then lined a two-run single to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
