BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Loyola’s Lowery Signs With Rangers
Terrell Lowery, a baseball and basketball star at Loyola Marymount, signed with the Texas Rangers and will play minor league baseball this summer before returning to play basketball with the Lions next season.
The 20-year-old Lowery, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound outfielder, will report later this week to Butte (Mont.) of the Pioneer League. He was the Rangers’ second-round selection in last week’s amateur free agent draft. Lowery will return to the Lions after a junior season in which he finished fifth in the nation in scoring with 28.5 points per game and third in assists at 9.1. In baseball, Lowery batted .407 with three homers and 25 runs batted in 31 games.
The Seattle Mariners signed outfielder Craig Griffey, 20-year-old brother of Ken Griffey Jr. and son of Ken Griffey Sr., to a minor league contract. Craig, a sophomore cornerback for Ohio State last season, was picked by the Mariners in the 42nd round of last week’s major league amateur baseball draft.
The Mariners said the youngest Griffey, an outfielder, will report to the team’s Arizona minicamp in Tempe on Tuesday.
