EL RIO : House Fire Leaves Family Homeless

Share

An El Rio family of four lost their home when the small structure, which county fire officials said was substandard housing, burned to the ground.

After receiving numerous calls about a fire at 2603 Alvarado St., Ventura County firefighters arrived at 7:21 p.m. Thursday to find the structure engulfed in flames.

“When we first looked at it, we thought it was a shed,” Dispatcher Annie Ironside said. “There was so much smoke it was hard to tell what it was.”

The house was owned by Rafael Serrado, who lived there with three other family members, Dispatcher Dennis Miller said.

Caseworkers from the Ventura County chapter of the American Red Cross will help the Serrado family find temporary shelter, Miller said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, he said.
