Most of Fernando Valenzuela’s Angel teammates didn’t discover he had been put on the disabled list until late Thursday, when they arrived in Boston and heard the news on TV.

Valenzuela boarded the team’s 2 p.m. charter flight from Ontario Airport to Boston but disembarked when told the thallium-treadmill test he took that morning indicated possible cardiac vessel problems. Valenzuela will undergo additional tests next week, a club spokesman said.

“I saw him on the plane, then I saw (ESPN) Sports Center and heard them say he’s on the 15-day DL and I said, ‘How can that be?’ ” catcher Lance Parrish said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Pitching coach Marcel Lachemann also said Valenzuela’s potential problem “took everybody by surprise.” Even trainer Ned Bergert said he hadn’t been made aware of any potential problems.

In an interview Friday with Channel 7’s Jim Hill, Valenzuela said he has never had a heart problem. “I never have any pain, or anything like that,” he said. “Right now I feel fine.” Asked if he was scared, Valenzuela said: “If I feeling bad, of course, but I don’t feel any different right now. I feel OK.” Valenzuela said he hoped his next checkout is good so he could get back to the club. “I do what doctors want me to do,” he said. “I hope it’s a little problem and everything come out right.”

Joe Grahe will start in Valenzuela’s place Tuesday at Milwaukee. No other pitcher will be recalled from triple-A Edmonton, because the Angels have 10 pitchers available and Floyd Bannister began a rehabilitation program Friday with Class-A Palm Springs. The only foreseeable move is the activation Monday of outfielder Junior Felix, who has been on the disabled list because of a strained right calf muscle. Grahe was recalled from Edmonton June 4 and has made two appearances, both in relief of Valenzuela.

Parrish was scratched from Friday’s lineup, the fourth consecutive game he has missed. Parrish threw Friday for the first time in four days but had tightness in his right forearm, caused by a strained flexor tendon. He said no additional tests on his arm have been scheduled, but some might be done if his arm doesn’t improve soon. . . . Infielder Bobby Rose strained his lower back sneezing Friday morning but was available. . . . The Red Sox will start Mike Gardiner today and Tom Bolton Sunday, instead of the reverse.
