California IN BRIEF : CHICO : New Helmet Law Hits Bicycle Riders
- Share via
Adult bicyclists will have to don helmets in a popular park under a new law that makes riding without protection a $35 offense. The ordinance requires riders to wear helmets in most of the 2,400-acre Bidwell Park, a regional attraction for cyclists. Supporters say the law will reduce injuries and save lives. Neurosurgeon Jeffrey Lobosky said one Chico clinic treats about 600 bicycle injuries a year, and 25% are head injuries. The city said there had been 11 reported injuries involving bicycles in the park over the last three years. Opponents said the measure was too intrusive. “I just have a real hard time with us telling everyone what to do to stay safe and how to do it,” said Mayor Mary Andrews. Laws in New York and Maryland require minors to wear helmets, but not adults. California requires helmets for small children riding on the back of a bicycle.
