Smith, Totah Win Heats at Oceanside Open

Surfers Colin Smith of Cardiff and Eric Totah of San Diego won third-round heats Thursday in the $35,000 Body Glove Oceanside Open at the Oceanside Pier.

Smith, who finished ahead of Greg Anderson, a regular on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals’ World Tour, and Totah advanced to today’s fourth round, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Smith is ranked 31st after four stops on the Bud Pro Surfing Tour, Totah 61st.

Also advancing with second place heat finishes were Rick Lasch of Del Mar (ranked 70th) and Joe Schirmer of San Diego (110th).

Two other ASP standouts, Richie Collins of Newport Beach and Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach, finished Nos. 1 and 2 in their heat.

Paul Barga of Encinitas and Rick Irons of Mission Beach failed to qualify.

FOOTBALL

Shawn Smith, a part-time weakside linebacker at Notre Dame in his freshman and sophomore seasons, and Chris Andressen, an offensive lineman from USC, will transfer to San Diego State this fall, SDSU officials confirmed Thursday.

Each will sit out the 1991 season before becoming eligible in 1992. Smith, a former New Jersey all-state high school player, has two years of eligibility remaining, and Andressen, from Downey, has three.

HORSE RACING

Caliente Racetrack will experiment with Friday racing beginning Friday, June 28 from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Caliente owner Jorge Hank Rhon said a mutuel handle of $220,000 or more on Fridays could be enough to keep the track open weekdays through the Del Mar and Oak Tree meetings.

The Friday experiment will continue until July 19. Beginning with the Del Mar meeting and continuing through Oak Tree, Caliente will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
