Children Blamed in 2-Acre Brush Fire

A Fourth of July fire burned two acres of brush in a mountainous area of Newbury Park, county fire officials said Friday.

The 11 a.m. Thursday blaze near the west end of Calle Alta Vista was caused by children playing with matches, officials said.

The fire was contained by 12:29 p.m., authorities said.

A water-dumping helicopter was used to douse the flames, which burned up the side of a grassy hill.

Mild winds from the west apparently helped firefighters.

“If we had a whipping wind, it could have picked it up and made it a real fire,” Ventura County fire spokeswoman Sam Meier said.
