Riccardo Patrese of Italy bumped Ayrton Senna out of the pole for the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours, France. Patrese, averaging 128.140 m.p.h., drove his Williams-Renault around the 2.645-mile circuit in 1:14.559.
Senna, the defending world champion, was third in 1:14.857, an improvement over Friday when he won the provisional pole, but not enough to catch Patrese.
