UCLA’s Joe Max Moore of Irvine and Hartwick College’s Paul Conway of Portland, Ore., scored two goals in the first 11 minutes as the United States soccer team upset Ireland, 2-1, Saturday on the opening day of the World University Games.

The U.S. team squandered a series of second-half chances that would have given it a better goal advantage in a first-round group that includes Great Britain and Iran.

Great Britain beat Iran, 2-1.

The Irish lineup was the first competitive soccer team to come from both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. They previously had separate college soccer teams.

“I’m not happy with the way we performed in the final third of the field,” U.S. Coach Jim Lennox said. “We were trying one-two passes and clever flicks instead of whacking it in the net.”

Also on Saturday, the Games’ ruling body, FISU, chose Zakopane, Poland, (1993) and Jaca, Spain, (1995) for forthcoming winter games and two Mediterranean sites for summer games--Sicily in 1997 and Palma, Mallorca, in 1999.

Summer World University Games previously were awarded to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1993 and Fukuoka, Japan, in 1995.

The FISU also re-elected Primo Nebiolo, of Italy, who has been president of the organization for the past 30 years.
