PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Allen Reportedly to File Antitrust Suit

Share

Tailback Marcus Allen will file an antitrust suit against the NFL over free agency, the Sporting News reported. Jim Quinn, who will represent Allen, said the suit will be filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles and that Allen will be joined by several other players based in California.

Allen’s lawyers will attempt to stop the NFL from moving the suit to Minneapolis, where a similar suit by Freeman McNeil is scheduled for trial in February. Allen, who has had several lengthy holdouts, decided it was pointless to hold out again and last weekend signed a one-year deal worth $1.1 million.

Although Allen is the leading rusher in team history and led the team again last season, he didn’t receive a raise for the fourth consecutive year. Allen could not be reached for comment.

Quarterback Jay Schroeder, who missed practice for the second consecutive day because of a virus, returned to Los Angeles to be examined by a specialist. Coach Art Shell said Schroeder’s fever has not broken. With Schroeder out, rookie quarterback Todd Marinovich is getting more practice time because there are only three quarterbacks in camp.

The Raiders recalled rookie offensive tackle Rob Flory, who was cut last week, because they needed to fill out the training camp roster as a result of injuries. . . . Punter Jeff Gossett, whose wife had a baby boy Thursday, is due to report to camp today, Shell said. . . . Tackle Steve Wright, who had off-season knee surgery, left practice in the morning when he felt a pop in his knee but returned to practice in the afternoon after tests revealed no damage.
