Collins Wins Speedway Scratch Main Event

Phil Collins of Newport Beach won the 23rd annual Orange County Fair Derby in the speedway motorcycle racing four-lap scratch main event Friday at the Orange County Fairgrounds.

Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa was second, Mike Faria of Colton was third and Gary Hicks of Glen Avon finished fourth.

Schwartz, who won the coin toss, took the pole and had the early lead. But Schwartz lost control for a moment in the fourth turn of the first lap, allowing Collins to pass.

Josh Larsen of Balboa won the four-lap consolation main event. Friday’s attendance was 8,179.
