Two days after team doctors for the San Francisco 49ers banned left tackle Bubba Paris from practice because of a high cholesterol count and poor conditioning, his replacement, Roy Foster suffered an injured left shoulder during practice.

Second-year 49er tackle Frank Pollack is suffering back spasms and is unable to practice. Free agent tackle Ricky Siglar was taken off the field Friday because of a sore right knee.

Wide receiver Herman Moore of Virginia, the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft, signed with the Detroit Lions, reportedly getting a three-year contract worth $2.4 million.

Moore holds Virginia’s career records with 2,504 yards receiving and 27 touchdown catches. He is third on the Cavalier all-time receptions list with 114.

The signing of Moore leaves Detroit with two unsigned draft choices: defensive lineman Kelvin Pritchett of Mississippi, the 20th pick in the first round who was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Dallas Cowboys, and wide receiver Reggie Barrett of Texas El Paso, a third-round selection.

Veterans Fredd Young and Harvey Armstrong left the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp after failing physicals.

Young, a four-time Pro Bowler who joined the Colts after being traded by the Seattle Seahawks in 1988, announced his retirement because of an arthritic right hip.

Armstrong, who failed his physical because of bad knees, started 10 of 12 games at nose tackle last season.

Two-time Pro Bowl running back Rueben Mayes of the New Orleans Saints announced his retirement. Mayes was chosen to the Pro Bowl after his first two seasons, 1986 and 1987, but could not play in either game because of off-season surgery.
