Two victims of a weekend hit-and-run accident remained hospitalized Sunday, and one had to have his left leg amputated, authorities said.

A 21-year-old Oceanside man has been charged with driving drunk and leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly plowed his vehicle into two men about 12:20 a.m. Saturday as they changed a tire along the shoulder of northbound Interstate 5 near Cannon Road in Carlsbad, the California Highway Patrol said.

Alfredo Gonzalez, 49, of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was in fair condition late Sunday at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, according to a nursing supervisor. His left leg has been amputated above the knee, and his right leg has been fractured, she said.

Jaime de la Rosa, 52, of Los Angeles remained in critical condition at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

The driver, Jose Perez, 21, of Oceanside was booked at County Jail in Vista, where he was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail, officials said.

The suspect’s vehicle reportedly drifted into the right shoulder, where the two men were changing a flat tire on the left rear side of their van.

After striking the two men, the CHP said, Perez continued driving north.

A witness followed the vehicle, eventually leading to the driver’s arrest in Oceanside, the CHP said.
