Searchers said Sunday they may have found the trail of a 13-year-old Boy Scout who wandered away from his troop two days earlier in the San Bernardino Mountains.

About 75 searchers and five dogs spent a second day scouring a rugged, 130-square-mile area before picking up a trail on the south side of Mt. San Gorgonio, said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Debbie Dorrough. Footprints on the High Creek Trail at about the 10,000-foot level match shoes Jared Michael Negrette of El Monte was wearing, she said.

“That’s the most positive thing we’ve had all day,” she said.

The boy had no food and little, if any, water. He was not dressed for 50-degree overnight temperatures but was believed to be alive and well, the deputy said.

Jared vanished Friday afternoon while his troop was on a hike from Camp Tahquitz about 10 miles south of Big Bear Lake.
