Klein Reaches Final 16 in Junior Match Play

Emilee Klein of Studio City, the low qualifier in the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Golf championships, won her first two rounds of match-play competition Wednesday at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan.

Klein, a student at Notre Dame High, defeated Rachel Poston of Winter Park, Fla., 5 and 4, in the morning round.

In the afternoon round, Klein defeated Kimberly Little of Temple Terrace, Fla., 3 and 2. With the two victories, Klein advanced to the final 16.

Leanne Wong of Eagle Rock High won her first match but fell to Robin Buck of Edwardsville, Ill., 4 and 2, in the afternoon round.

Klein’s third-round opponent today will be Victoria Boysen, of Fort Worth, Texas. Boysen advanced with a win over Shannon McDonald of Kenilworth, Ill., 4 and 3.

Jeremiah Clark, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive tackle from Moorpark College, has failed to complete his associate of arts degree requirements and will not enroll at Cal State Fullerton this semester, Titan Coach Gene Murphy said. Clark was projected as a starter.

Another area player bound for Fullerton, Lester Larry, a defensive tackle from Antelope Valley College, also failed to fulfill the academic requirements.

Bill Dobson, an assistant coach at Occidental College the past four seasons, has joined Cal State Fullerton’s football staff as an offensive line coach.

Dobson, 32, was a four-year starter on the Occidental offensive line from 1977-81 and twice earned All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Mike Bryan of Camarillo advanced into the semifinal round of the boys’ 14 division in the Texas Open tennis tournament in Austin, Tex. Bryan, 13, posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chase Emerson of Dallas.

Bryan’s twin brother, Bob, was defeated in the third round Tuesday by Steve Manicott of Shreveport, La., 6-3, 7-6.
