It appears that Cal State Northridge, hopeful of gaining admittance to the Big West Conference, will remain an NCAA Division I independent for at least a few more years.

Representatives from Big West schools this week unanimously accepted Nevada (formerly Nevada Reno) as a replacement for the departing Fresno State while bypassing discussion of further expansion.

Jody McRoberts, spokeswoman for the conference, said Friday that expansion is not under consideration in sports other than football.

In 1992, the Big West will begin playing football as a consortium rather than as a conference. By 1995, each member school will be required to individually meet NCAA Division I-A standards for attendance, stadium size and number of intercollegiate sports offered in order to remain at that level.

McRoberts said other football independents may be added to the consortium. However, Northridge, which plays football at the Division II level, is not a likely candidate.

Judith Brame, associate athletic director at Northridge, said that school officials have devised a preliminary plan to expedite the process of formally informing athletes of their scholarship status.

Brame said Northridge coaches will be asked to submit forms to the athletic secretary by June 1 in six categories: expired scholarships, new scholarships, renewed scholarships for the same amount, increased renewals, reduced renewals and nonrenewals.

After administrative approval, the lists would then be passed on to the school’s financial-aid office, which would send written notification to each athlete by July 1 in accordance with NCAA rules.

The revision comes in light of charges by Marty Kilian, a former pitcher on the Northridge baseball team, that his scholarship was improperly revoked.

In the past, Northridge coaches were given until July 1 to submit their lists to the athletic secretary. Brame said the new plan will be outlined as a “corrective action” when Northridge reports its infraction to the NCAA.

A golf tournament dedicated to the memory of Mike Holcomb of Westlake High is scheduled for Monday at North Ranch Country Club. Registration is 9 a.m. and golfers tee off at 10:30 a.m.

Registration fee is $195 and includes greens fees and dinner.

Holcomb, a 1986 Westlake graduate, was an All-Marmonte League defensive back and held the school record in the 400 meters until his brother Erik broke it last spring. Mike Holcomb died in a car accident in Thousand Oaks in 1989.

The golf tournament will serve as fund-raiser for a scholarship in Holcomb’s name. Funds also will be donated to the Westlake athletic department and the new stadium drive. In addition, proceeds will help fund a film of Holcomb’s life that will serve as a cautionary story about drunken driving, according to his father, Buzz Holcomb.
