Donald Sweetnam, a lifetime Glendale resident, has been named director of development for the Assistance League of Southern California. He will direct the league’s annual drive to raise funds for its 10 agencies and other special programs. A graduate of Occidental College, Sweetnam was previously grant writer for the Music Center of Los Angeles.

* James M. Gibson Jr. is the new principal of Glendale High School. Gibson has been the principal of Burbank High School since 1988 and was a teacher in the Burbank district since 1980. He replaces Sam Harvey, who retired June 30.

* Former La Canada Flintridge Mayor O. Warren Hillgren has been elected chairman of the Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation board of directors. The foundation, formed in 1974 to raise funds for the long-range plans of the hospital, has launched two donor programs, Verdugo Corporate Circle and Verdugo Circle. Hillgren has lived in La Canada Flintridge for 30 years.
